UK optometrists and other health care professionals promote the importance of good hygiene

A team of UK optometrists and other health care professionals have travelled to Malawi to teach patients and clinical staff the importance of good hygiene.

The 48-strong group, which included professionals from the ophthalmology, dentistry and paediatric sectors, treated over 5,000 patients.

During their week-long stay in the Mulanje District they dealt which a variety of rare tropical conditions not seen in the UK such as snake poison in the eye, HIV-related fundii, meibomitis, trachoma and a dendritic ulcer. They also performed a number of cataract operations and fitted two prosthetic eyes.

Highlighting the significance of hand hygiene to combat the unnecessary spread of infections, the team used flashcards produced by Johnson & Johnson Vision Care to explain the message.

Next generation laser eye surgery

Optical Express has announced a US$12m (£8.1m) investment in ‘next generation’ laser eye surgery technology.

Three-quarters of the financial investment will be spent in its UK-based laser refractive clinics.

This latest investment will see all 44 Optical Express laser treatment clinics across the UK and Europe installing state-of-the-art iFS 150 femtosecond laser systems during 2010, reinforcing its aim to develop the highest quality science-based products and services.

Group chairman and CEO David Moulsdale (pictured) said: “This level of investment is testament to our on-going commitment to ensuring that our patients get the very best visual outcomes in the safest manner possible. As a result of the investment, we are able to confirm that even more of our patients will achieve better than 20/20 vision.”

The equipment, designed to improve LASIK flap creation, will give a customised laser eye treatment for patients which is claimed to be safer, faster and will deliver improved outcomes.

Alliance Boots will race to complete the entire rebranding of its opticians

Alliance Boots will race to complete the entire rebranding of its opticians business before the end of the current financial year, it was claimed this week.

And, in answering a question posed by OT at an annual gathering of journalists to discuss its preliminary results, its health and beauty division chief executive said the company expected to go on a recruitment drive for its expanded Boots Opticians chain.

In what was described by Boots as a retail market of ‘subdued’ consumer demand, the overall business did well, its annual trading profit smashing through the £1bn mark for the first time (for the year to March 31).

Boots Opticians played its part in the retail giant’s health and beauty division strong growth in profit –nevertheless, it suffered from difficult retail markets and in the UK ‘regulatory pressures impacting dispensing profitability’. However, Boots Opticians delivered £320m in revenue, though in like-for-like terms, its growth was only marginal at 0.2%.
